Moore Park
Zoo [Sydney] (continued):
Sleightholme & Campbell also found two additional references in the
minutes of the Zoological Society of NSW (published in the Evening News
[Sydney]) relating to donations of thylacines to |
Moore
Park in 1900 by a Dr. Rundle (President of the Zoological Society); the
first in April, and the other in July.
It is probable that the April donation by Rundle refers to the Stevenson
capture of March 1900. However, the July Minutes state that a Tasmanian
wolf was also donated by Rundle in June 1900.
If correct, and Rundle did indeed donate two thylacines, |

then his July donation
was also probably sourced from City Park Zoo in Launceston and takes the
total number of thylacines displayed at Moore Park Zoo to 5. Research
is ongoing and updates will be provided as they become available.

Taronga Zoo [Sydney]:
Taronga Zoo officially
opened to the general public on the 7th October 1916. Only one
thylacine, a male, was ever displayed at the zoo. The thylacine
was obtained from Mrs. Mary Roberts's private zoo "Beaumaris" in Hobart,
and was on display at Taronga from 1918 until its death in 1923. |

Shortly after its arrival
at the zoo, the thylacine was placed in an enclosure next to a puma (Felis
concolor). The puma managed to pull the thylacine's tail through
the enclosure fence and bite most of the tail off. The only surviving
photograph of the Taronga thylacine shows it pacing along the perimeter
fence of its enclosure displaying the remnant of its tail. |
