This illustration, drawn by Robert
Kretschmer sometime before 1872, depicts a male thylacine attempting to
subdue a inexplicably oversized platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus).
Although Tasmanian platypus are in fact considerably larger than average,
with some adult males weighing up to 3 kg. (6.6 lb), they certainly do
not come close to reaching the fantastic scale illustrated below.
Incidentally, no platypus predation by thylacines has ever been observed
or recorded.
