A
superb head portrait of the thylacine by Henry C. Richter, one of John
Gould's illustrators. It was produced at the same time as Richter's
other thylacine painting, which depicts a pair
in profile, and is presented as plate 53 of Gould's "The
Mammals of Australia - Vol. 1", 1863. Like the other painting,
this one is also titled "Thylacinus cynocephalus".
In collaboration with Richter and a number
of other artists, Gould produced spectacular depictions of many Australian
animals, including the now extinct Toolache wallaby
(Macropus
greyi). |
